The Hollywood Reporter reported that she later dropped out of the project due to creative disagreements. In 2019, Robbie’s role as Barbie was confirmed. Robbie said to Variety in July 2023 that playing the iconic Barbie doll comes with “a lot of baggage”. “And lots of nostalgia connections. She went on to say, “The first day we wrote this song, Finneas, and me, in particular, because I was writing it from my perspective, were only thinking of Barbie. “I didn’t think about myself at all during the writing process.” She continued, saying that she was so focused on watching the movie. “I was inspired by the movie, this character, and how I imagined she would feel. And wrote about that.”
Billie described it as one of the most amazing experiences of her lifetime. The next week, I played it all day in my car and for everyone. And I thought, “This is how I feel.” “I didn’t mean to say it,” I thought. It was the most surreal experience I have ever had. I thought, “oh, yes, I am writing about me, but from a third-person perspective.” I thought about myself objectively which made me feel connected to her and me.”
Billie was shocked by the first few minutes of the movie when Gerwig invited Billie to an advance screening. Finneas looked at me and said, “Whoa, this is crazy. Billie remembered that she would play a scene, walk in front and say, “In the next part I want it really to feel like this,” then she would do her Greta Gerwig thing, and come up to show her passion.
She kept walking to the front to explain the next part. She was like “It is so frightening to show anyone this.” She wanted to explain it in detail and give the full context it required… She was like ‘I don’t care’. If you feel inspired, please make something. If you don’t feel inspired, it’s okay. It’s fine. I would love to have my dream come true.
Billie sat with her blonde hair pristine and remembered tiny costumes she wore in her previous music videos. Billie also created a clothing collection (!!!) The movie was filmed in pink velour tracksuits.
