Barbiecore makeup is not new to anyone who’s been to a party themed in the ’90s, but it’s evolved. This trend is gaining popularity among TikTok beauty creators, as well as makeup enthusiasts who demonstrate how to apply Barbie makeup for the modern age. The predictable washes in baby pink are being replaced with muted makeup looks, and graphic liners that capture the fun-loving spirit of Barbiecore.

The Barbie movie is just around the corner and the trend has never been bigger. The Barbiecore makeup trend is opposite the “clean girl” aesthetic. It has roots in the ultra-feminine beauty looks of the 1990s and 2000s.

The bright pink eyeshadow and glowing pink blush that accentuate your cheekbones will not go unnoticed. As others notice you when you walk into a room with Barbiecore makeup, your own mind can change. You may look different but you also feel different. Jaleesa Jaikaran is a celebrity makeup artist who beams through my computer screen while we talk via Zoom about the rapid rise of bright, pink, and exaggerated makeup, fashion and decor, dubbed “Barbiecore.”

She says, “I was wearing something else, and I wasn’t feeling the vibe.” “And now I want to appear on camera because I am confident.”

Jaikaran is also Barbiecore on camera, but she has a new twist. She is wearing a hot pink, sleeveless jacket, with a full-face of Mary Kay makeup. Mary Kay, from pink Cadillacs to pink lip colors, is synonymous with pink. It was a staple in makeup kits throughout the 1990s and 2000s, which has evolved into TikTok’s age. Jaikaran created the eye makeup look by using Mary Kay’s Warm Hues Eyeshadow Palette (39 dollars), which is a six pan collection with matte and shimmer finishes. She uses this palette frequently because of its versatility for different skin tones and styles.

She says: “You don’t have to stick with the traditional placements of eyeshadow. You can experiment with bolder colors like ‘Purple Vibes or Sienna Skies’.” You don’t have to stick with the traditional placements of eyeshadow. “I used a fluffy eyeshadow brush to blend my color in the inner corner.”

Combining a deep pink lip gloss with a shimmering pink in her inner corner, Jaikaran’s eye look is less of a grab-bag than it is an dimensional gradient. It’s both fun and wearable. It’s not that the first is bad, but Jaikaran’s Barbiecore makeup looks are more wearable and accessible to those who want to try the trend out before fully joining the Barbie church.

Barbiecore makeup is as much fun in real life as it appears.
My makeup style ranges from “barely-there” to “face planted on a heap of glitter”. I don’t mind a lot of color but I like a trend that has varying shades. I decided to test Barbiecore’s flexibility by first taking my cue from Jaikaran and creating a subtle Barbiecore look, then transforming it into something extra.

After my usual light foundation routine, I grabbed my Mary Kay Warm Hues Eyeshadow Palette ($44 at Macy’s) and basked in a reflective glow from the shimmer shades. Then, using a fluffy eyeshadow blending brush, I blended “Sienna Skies”, into my crease. Then, using a slightly smaller and more dense eyeshadow, I gently swirled the “Purple vibes” shade into my inner corner. Focusing on softening the outer edges, I created a gradient by blending it.

Pink makeup is a trend that has been around since 202.

I used my finger to layer “Peach Dream” and “Golden Possibilities”, which made the color appear lighter and more pink on my skin. Benefit Cosmetics Precisely My Brow pencil ($25 on Amazon) was used to fill in my eyebrows and smudge a mixture of “Dream Big Brown”, “Purple Vibes”, and “Dream Big Brown”. I finished the look with the viral Maybelline Sky High mascara ($9.48 on Amazon).

Charlotte Tilbury Glow Cream Bronzer (56$ at Sephora) was used to highlight my cheekbones. To achieve a peach-colored blush, I applied the shade “Sienna Skies”, from the Warm Hues Palette ($28 at Kosas), to my cheeks. Then, I dabbed some Rare Beauty’s Liquid Highlighter ($22 at Sephora) onto the tops my cheekbones.

After that, I applied Pat McGrath’s Lip Fetish Divinyl Lip Shine (39 dollars at Pat McGrath Labs), in “Boudoir Rose,” followed by a few swipes of Mary Kay Unlimited Lip Gloss (16 dollars) in “Pink Ballerina,” a favorite shade of Jaikaran’s. She says, “I tell my friends to stop sleeping on the lip gloss every time they ask what I am wearing. It’s super lightweight, non-sticky, and feels great on your lips.

The formula’s ultra creamy texture is hard to beat. The name was enough to convince me, but considering that I had a unhealthy attachment to Ballerina Barbie for most of my childhood, it’s no surprise.

I was left with a radiant everyday makeup look which, in my opinion, captured the whimsical nature of the Barbiecore fashion.

My extra gene started working like clockwork not long after I completed this look. In my head, a chorus of voices began to grow louder, whispering, “Come on Barbie, let’s party.” SUVA Beauty’s Hydra FX Liner in neon pink ($16 on Amazon) was sweeping across my eyelids before I even knew what I was doing. I quickly layered more blush using Makeup by Mario’s Soft Pop Powder Blush (26 at Sephora), “Poppy Pink.” Then I added more “Pink Ballerina,” until it was literally dripping from my lips. It was a lot and it looked perfect. I looked just like my older, cooler sister from high school who would kill the bully in your class with a backhanded kindness. She’d also buy you alcohol while your parents were not looking.

Barbiecore makeup has changed me physically and emotionally.
Both styles are made from the same fabric. They use color in an interesting way, and convey a similar feeling of positivity and cheerfulness. The Barbiecore trend can be adapted. But I did not expect how much the looks would boost my mood.

There is a clear link between makeup and mood. When we think of happiness, we tend to think about the things that give us joy or make us feel accomplished,” says Rachel Wien PsyD. She is a psychologist in NYC and founder at Milestone CBT. Making up can be fun, both in terms of the process and the end result. It can also make us feel accomplished, in that we have done something for ourselves. We may be exploring new trends or perfecting a particular technique or look.

A bright pink makeup look is not a panacea to the negative emotions and the gloomy headlines. However, it is a great way to express yourself or lift your spirits. Although I can feel these positive emotions and many more when I am not wearing makeup I would be lying if i said it wasn’t easier to evoke feelings of confidence and levity by covering my face with color and sparkles.

I looked just like my older, cooler sister from high school who would kill your bully with a backhanded kindness when your parents aren’t looking and buy you liquor when they’re not looking.

This feeling is not unique to me. Numerous studies have shown that being creative makes you happier. According to Wien, the key to using makeup to boost your mood is to spend time doing something you love. This can be true for a lot of people. People who wear colorful, fun clothes tend to feel more confident about their style and about themselves. Playing with colors and trends can bring joy and excitement to someone who enjoys beauty or fashion.

Jaikaran believes that people want to enjoy themselves, which is a natural part of the Barbiecore trend. She says that before, the makeup approach was “you have to do this, and you have do that.” “And now people are saying, ‘No! I’m not going to do this, but I will have fun doing it.’

After several months of wearing very little makeup, I decided to try Barbiecore makeup. Since I was unable to muster up the energy for a colorful, full makeup look, it felt futile. It felt good to finally sit down and experiment with colors. I felt like a prodigal child returning home. Even if it was only for a couple of hours, I felt focused and calm. After I finished, looking in the mirror, I felt just like myself, the girl that loves to paint her face with any color she wants. I was ready to make all kinds of plans, do all sorts of things and laugh at things that weren’t funny. I felt I could be anyone in the spirit of Barbie. I will not let that feeling go any time soon.
